Same Day Crowns

Crowns may be considered after significant decay, a large existing restoration, fracture, heavy wear, or certain root canal treatments. Whether you need one depends on how much healthy tooth remains, where the damage is located, your bite, and whether a more conservative restoration can do the job.

When Does a Tooth Need More Than a Filling?

A filling replaces a limited area of damaged tooth structure. A crown surrounds much more of the visible tooth. When a tooth has lost substantial structure, another large filling may not provide predictable support.

If the damaged area is smaller and the tooth remains structurally sound, a tooth-colored dental filling may be appropriate. If the tooth is substantially weakened, a crown may provide broader protection.

Reasons a Dentist May Recommend a Crown

• A large cavity has removed significant tooth structure.
• A tooth is cracked, fractured, or weakened.
• A large existing filling is failing or leaves limited healthy tooth.
• A tooth has significant wear that affects shape or function.
• A root-canal-treated tooth needs protection based on its location and remaining structure.
• A dental implant is ready to receive its final crown restoration.

What Happens When You Get a Dental Crown?

1. Evaluate the tooth, symptoms, bite, existing dental work, and relevant imaging.
2. Remove decay or failing material and prepare the tooth for the planned restoration.
3. Capture a digital scan or impression of the prepared tooth and bite.
4. Fabricate the crown; a temporary may be used when the final restoration is not placed at the same visit.
5. Check the final crown for fit, contacts, bite, and appearance before securing it.

What Does “Same-Day Crown” Mean?

Some practices can design and fabricate selected crowns in the office using digital scanning and chairside milling, allowing the final restoration to be completed in one appointment. Not every tooth or clinical situation is appropriate for the same workflow.

How Long Does a Crown Last?

There is no guaranteed lifespan. Longevity depends on the supporting tooth, restoration fit, bite forces, oral hygiene, decay risk, grinding or clenching, diet, and new trauma or disease. A crowned tooth can still develop decay near the margin.

What If a Crown Comes Off or the Tooth Hurts?

A loose or lost crown should be evaluated because the exposed tooth may be sensitive or vulnerable. New pain can have several causes, including decay, fracture, bite problems, inflammation inside the tooth, or gum problems.
